Why These Techniques Matter Now

These techniques are finding new audiences in ways they never have before.

Contemporary artists are reimagining them.

Galleries are recognizing them.

And most people are yet to discover their richness.

Madhubani Painting

In Madhubani, layered lines create visual depth. In this workshop, you'll learn: The foundational technique: Madhubani's signature double-line outlining Border patterns: Traditional framing patterns that define composition Bird anatomy: How Mithila artists depict creatures (peacocks, parrots, birds) and convey symbolism Composition principles: How to arrange elements so they work together visually Layering methods: Building depth through overlapping lines and patterns Colouring systems: Traditional and contemporary approaches to bringing the painting to life Complete a full painting by the end—something you'll have made entirely yourself

Gond Art

Gond art looks organic and intuitive, but it's actually built on a specific pattern-fill methodology. In this workshop, you'll learn: The Gond approach: How tribal artists transform simple forms into complex, intricate work through systematic pattern-filling Tree and plant anatomy: The distinctive way Gond artists structure flora—roots, branches, and foliage with intentional decoration Animal and bird representation: Techniques for depicting wildlife with movement and life through pattern Pattern systems: The decorative fills that make Gond distinctive—how patterns interact and build visual interest Composition and balance: How to fill a space so it feels alive without feeling chaotic Colour and medium: Selecting materials and colours that work authentically Complete a full Gond painting—a work that showcases the meditative, detailed quality of this technique

Warli Painting

Warli's power is in what it doesn't do. Using only circles, triangles, and lines, Warli artists create entire village narratives. In this workshop, you'll learn: Warli's geometric foundation: Why circles, triangles, and lines are enough to express everything Border construction: Traditional geometric frames that contain and define the composition Sacred geometry: How temples and spiritual spaces are represented through triangular forms Figure drawing: Depicting human figures (dancing, farming, celebrating) using only basic shapes Narrative composition: How to tell a story within the frame—showing daily life and celebration Visual balance: How minimalism creates impact—the negative space is as important as the painted space Medium and background: Understanding the correct base (traditionally mud, now adapted materials) and how it changes the effect Complete a full Warli village scene—demonstrating how much meaning you can convey with minimal elements

Your Instructor

Nehaa Rani Sudhakar

Master of Fine Arts, Pracheen Kala Kendra Chandigarh

20+ years teaching experience

Nehaa didn't learn Madhubani from a textbook. She grew up with it in Bihar, watching women in her community paint these patterns for festivals and ceremonies. It was part of daily life before it was ever a "subject" to study.

She went on to earn her MFA and has spent the past two decades teaching students across India and now internationally. She runs The Canvas Art Academy from Goa, where she teaches both traditional techniques and contemporary applications.

What makes her workshops different is the context. You won't just copy patterns—you'll understand what they mean, where they come from, and why they've survived for generations.
